Food waste or food loss is food that is discarded or lost uneaten. As of 2011, 1.3 billion tons of food, about one third of global food production, are lost or wasted annually.[1]Loss and wastage occurs on all steps in the supply chain, namely:

  • Farming
  • Post-Harvest and Packing
  • Processing
  • Distribution
  • Consumption in Retail, Food Service, and Households
  • Disposal

In low-income countries most loss occurs during production; in developed countries about 220 pounds of food per person and year is wasted at consumption stage (wikipedia).[1]
