Every day, approximately 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries, and it's higher for women living in rural areas and among poorer communities. Young adolescents face a higher risk of complications and death as a result of pregnancy than older women.Skilled care before, during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborn babies.

Out of the 800, 440 deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and 230 in Southern Asia, compared to five in high-income countries. The risk of a woman in a developing country dying from a pregnancy-related cause during her lifetime is about 25 times higher compared to a woman living in a developed country. Maternal mortality is a health indicator that shows very wide gaps between rich and poor, both between countries and within them. View interactive map (Source WHO)
